The Power of Words

Words hold power. The words you speak, hear, and surround yourself with start to shape the person you are. So what words are you allowing to shape your life?

If I’m being honest, I used to say, listen and read words that were NOT good for me. I thought they were entertaining, they felt good to say at the time, and I figured it wasn’t like I was saying anything to hurt anyone. Little did I realize they were slowly hurting me and keeping me from who I was meant to be even. Of course I had heard people say you should watch what you say or listen to. I knew what I was saying and listening to was bad and negative but I wasn’t ready to give them up. It wasn’t until I started pouring in the right words that I realized that they were not good for me.

I like to think I’m a slow burner kind of learner sometimes, this was something I did not do all at once but in a slow progression I started to change. I started reading scripture more, listening to worship songs on certain days, trying out Christian fiction books, and even popping in a Christian podcast on a walk here and there. I started to see a shift in how I acted, how I talked, how I treated others, and honestly how I felt. I was still going through difficult times (still am and will have hard times ahead too) but the way I felt about my situation and the actions I take now are completely different. It has everything to do with what I was pouring into myself and filling up my soul with God and His Word.

These verses are part of the Shema, Deuteronomy 6:4-9, that Moses gave the Israelites to help them commit to God and obey His commands. As I read those words today I think to myself I want to go deeper with God! I want to memorize God’s Words directly just like I do my favorite song. I want God’s Words to be in my head just like those TikTok trending sounds or catchy commercial songs. This way when hard times come along, and I know they will, I will hear His Words not my own.

Here are 3 ways I’m trying out this week to memorize a verse:

  1. Write it on my whiteboard in my restroom. Yes, I’m a little strange and have a whiteboard there to put inspiration quotes already. So DUH it should have scripture on it too. That way any time I’m there (getting ready or just ya know having to go 😆) I can read and learn. It could also be a sticky note or dry erase marker right on the mirror!
  2. Put a screensaver on my phone with the verse. Every time I swipe open I read it to myself or better yet out loud.
  3. Read it aloud 3 times before my feet touch the floor in the mornings.

I encourage you to try it out with me. I’d love to hear how it went or if you have other ways to memorize God’s Word.

God, help me to not rush through Your Word when I’m reading scripture. Let me truly meditate on it with You. I know that every word written in the bible has meaning so help me to slow down this week to hear each word. I pray that everyone reading this will grow closer to You this week too. I love you, God, and it’s in Your name we pray. Amen.
