The sun slowly bleeds into the horizon. Leaves stir chaotically in a whirlwind. Giggles and playful screams fill the night air. Halloween is here! As I sit to write this today before all the excitement starts, I canât help but reflect on this âFaith-Filled Fridayâ that God actually may not be too mad at this day.
Whether I sit outside with a bowl in my lap, camped out in my lawn chair, or I answer the knocks and doorbell constantly throughout the day, I know I am going to be among my community. I will have a quick chat with people I know before their kids tug and pull them away, before the next house, âcuz well, CANDY! There will be people I know from a wave across the neighborhood as we hustle on our daily ways, but today they will slow down and say a few words with me, too. Then there will be families I have never met or seen before, and we will at least exchange a âHappy Halloweenâ and âThank you!â Typically, I see more people in my community in a few hours than I will in a week. My introverted self will have more short, passing conversations with strangers than I will in, well, to be honest, maybe even a month! There is just something about Halloween.
God calls us to have a relationship with Him, but He also wants us to be in community with each other. In Hebrews 10:24-25, God tells us to be there for one another and gather together. âLet us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.â (NLT) In Ecclesiastes 4:9-10, God talks about how we should find strength in community. âTwo are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor. If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.â
I understand that some people, whether Christians or of other beliefs, do not celebrate Halloween, and I respect that. I just felt led to share a little reflection God placed on my heart today. I hope it encourages someone and sparks a conversation with God for you. Happy Halloween, yâall!
