“Palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy…
Nervous, but on the surface, he looks calm and ready.”
-Eminem “Lose Yourself”
Okay, I know what you’re thinking: isn’t this a Christian blog, and why is she quoting Eminem? Two quick points before diving in: one, I love Eminem and think he’s a lyrical genius, and two, these words are powerful to us all, not just before a rap battle.
My palms are definitely getting sweaty as a significant day approaches —a day, if I’m honest, I’ve waited for since the second grade!! I am meeting with a publisher about a book I’ve been working on, y’all! (Apologies for the excessive use of exclamation points, but SO pumped!!) While I’m excited for the opportunity and learning experience, I am very nervous. I do not want to leave anything unsaid, and I hope it leads to something. I am realistic and know that it probably won’t end in a ‘yes, let’s get publishing together today’ (A girl can dream, though!). However, I do know good things are coming from it. I have already learned so much about the process, and my confidence as a writer has grown significantly. I know I’m on the right path with God.

I have always loved writing. I, like many of you here, have dreamed of becoming an author. Something changed within the last two to three years though. I started taking my personal journalings with God to write Christian content only. I enjoy writing devotionals for my work as an Associate Director of Student Ministry but I absolutely love writing children’s books. It must be the former Elementary teacher in me. No scratch that it is God showing me my gifts He has given me.
I know God has plans for me in my writing. I know He is building something in my books and also here even though I may not see it yet. I mean you see my likes here, small. Honestly though I set out to reach a few and I truly mean that so if my books get to reach a few families too, then I will be happy with God.
My book that I’m pitching is a Christian Early Reader Children’s book (more to come later). So as I close to hurry off to work so I can come home and prep more for the publisher, here’s my question to you as fellow writers: What are some tips or things I should be prepared for? I’ve got an elevator pitch, a pitch deck, have researched my genre, researched my publisher, and will be researching more today. Any and all tips will be welcomed and I thank you in advance. I hope and pray that one day I can be the author that helps others get their story out too.
God, thank you for the ability to write and communicate Your message and Your Word. I pray that I do it well and that I keep you as my first always. I love you and I’m excited to do this with you. Amen.
