The Power of Emmanuel: Connecting Old Testament to the New Testament

“O come, thou Day-Spring, come and cheer
Our spirits by thine advent here
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night
And Death’s dark shadows put to flight
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee O Israel”
-’O Come O Come Emmanuel’ (Lauren Daigle)
Emmanuel, God with us. This song is one of my favorite Christmas songs, and here’s a cool fact: no one even knows who wrote it originally! If you research it, you will come across information about it being in liturgy so long ago in the early Christian church that it makes it hard to trace back. The fact that it has been around so long and passed down through generations, not giving anyone but God credit, shows me the power of its message.
‘Disperse the gloomy clouds of night and death’s dark shadows put to flight’ feels like a mic-drop kind of moment to me. I know everyone interprets songs differently, and I may see these lyrics from another angle next month, but to me, it says any darkness, evil, struggle, temptation has to GO! God will make any darkness flee, or take flight, so that we can fully rejoice and know that God is with us!
Another reason I love songs such as this one is that it is rooted in God’s Word. If you have not this Christmas season, take a peek at these two verses. Connected and both powerful in their own way, but each pointing to the birth of Jesus and letting us all know He will be with us, our Emmanuel.

(Old Testament AND New Testament pointing to our Savior, Jesus.
