Before the Joy: The Emotions of Christmas Eve

It wasn’t perfect, but it also was!
There was confusion.
There was fear.
There was questioning.
There was doubt.
There was frustration.
There was awe.

There was human-ness, so I’m making the inference that all these emotions and more happened between all the humans involved in the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. With the imperfections of humans, there was also perfection in the little baby born on the perfect day, in the perfect location, and for the perfect reason. That reason was to show God’s deep love for us through His sacrifice and giving us a way to be truly, once and for all, saved through His grace.
As I read the birth of Jesus from the bible this morning, both in Luke 2 and Matthew 1:18-2:23, I cannot help but see all the human emotion while this miracle was happening. Mary must have felt fear of what could happen to her, being an unwed, pregnant woman at the time. She surely would have questioned too: ‘How can this be? Why me?’

It’s easy to picture Joseph being frustrated, thinking at first that his fiancée, Mary, had been unfaithful. Then I imagine he had doubts: ‘Is this really happening?’
The Magi had to have been confused at first when they saw Jesus for the first time because their original plan of turning Him over to Herod would have instantly changed when they saw Jesus with their own eyes. That confusion surely would have changed to awe quickly as they realized that Jesus was the Messiah and they were witnessing a miracle!

As I read the verses today, I experience many similar emotions, but mainly I am awestruck, humbled, and still by the miracle of Christmas.
God, I am in awe of the miracle of Jesus coming down to be born fully human like me and fully God at the same time. I am humbled to know that You love me so much that You gave Your only Son for me so that I may be given a new life, free of my sins. God, I also sit in stillness remembering this miraculous story and ultimate gift You have given us all. It is in Your Son’s name I pray, Amen.
