As I sat down to reflect on my blog from yesterday on “Listening to God on the Trail,” a short phrase came to mind: God is in the whispers. I know that was backed by scripture, so with a quick search using my Bible Chat App (Love it BTW!) I was taken to 1 Kings 19:11-12. In these verses, Elijah heard loud noises and saw crazy, attention-grabbing things, including a windstorm, an earthquake, and fire. The thing is, God was not in any of those things. I believe they were a distraction for Elijah and could have kept him from truly hearing what God had for him. Good thing Elijah was so close to God, as His prophet, because Elijah knew to slow down and listen to God’s ‘gentle whisper’ (1 Kings 19:12 NLT). God was in the whisper to Elijah.

With the world screaming so much at us from news, social media influencers, career advancement opportunities, to entertainment, to the busyness of our schedules, we have a ton of distractions today. While it is human nature to give these distractions our attention and even our anxiety, fear, worry, and stress, we have to resist and do the opposite. We need to sit in the quiet, turn off the noise of the world, be in God’s Word, and listen. I remember hearing a message from Christine Caine about turning our frequency to God and focusing on His voice, not the world’s.
When we focus on God and find moments of quiet to listen, we will be able to hear God’s whispers for us, just as Elijah did! Those whispers may seem small and insignificant. We may even question ‘did I hear you right, God? Surely you didn’t mean for me to do that?’ But we must listen to God’s whispers and recognize the power in them. We will know it is God only if we are in His Word daily, from reading a verse on our iPhone wallpaper to sitting down with our physical Bibles to dive deeper. When you know someone deeply and intimately, you recognize their voice even when you cannot see them. When you know God in a personal relationship by spending time in the Bible, you will know His whispers, and you will have the faith to follow God’s whispers.
