“Quit it,” I said for the seemingly hundredth time on our walk. My beagle was following his beagle nose a little more than usual this morning. I had to constantly stop, wait, and eventually give him a little tug on the leash to keep going. If I had not done that, I feel like we still might have been on the sidewalk in front of our house days later!
There were times when I saw the culprit drawing his nose. An empty candy wrapper, a flower, a bug crawling across our path, and a few other discarded items.
Other times, I just had to roll my eyes as he locked in on an invisible-to-me smell.
There were times I let him smell for a while because I knew he loved it, and it was not doing any harm.
Other times, I forced him to wait like before crossing the street. He is not a fan of waiting!
For all the frustration I have with our longer-than-needed walks, I can’t help but love his sweet looks back when he remembers I am with him on his favorite part of the day, his walkies!
I’m not so different on my walk with God. I pull off His path constantly, following my own nose, thinking I know the way. God is way more patient than I am with my beagle and tugs me back on His sidewalk, sometimes with a gentle tug and others more of a jerk when I stray too close to those ‘busy streets.’ I am so blessed that God loves me so much to keep working with me to walk my path.
God, I pray that I recognize the times when You are tugging me back onto Your path. I pray that you give me patience when it is time to wait in my journey. Just as I see my dog look back at me lovingly, I pray that I take the time to look back at what You have done in my life with a smile and see the love You have for me. Thank you, God, for walking with me every day and every moment. Amen.
