Loved Much, Forgiven More: A Holy Wednesday Reflection

Never stop learning. God never stops reaching for us, teaching us, and loving us.

It’s Holy Wednesday, the Wednesday leading up to the resurrection of Jesus on Easter Sunday. God highlighted 2 verses for me as I read the Gospels of what happened on this day when Jesus was still alive.

The first is found in the book of Luke: a Pharisee who is in an uproar because a woman (John names her Mary) is pouring expensive anointing oil on Jesus’ feet. They think not only that it is a waste of a year’s wages to buy the oil, but also that she is being wasteful, as the oil could be used to profit. However, the most shocking thing to them is that she is a sinner and not worthy in their eyes of being with Jesus. Jesus responds as The Good Teacher, with a parable to continue teaching and trying to reach them, even knowing that in a few days’ time He will be crucified and die. In the parable, Jesus says there are two men who owe money, one owes 500 pieces of silver and the other only 50 pieces. When their debts were canceled, Jesus asked, who is more loved. They respond that the one whose larger debt was canceled would obviously be the more loved man. That is when Jesus responds, “I tell you, her sins—and they are many—have been forgiven, so she has shown me much love. But a person who is forgiven little shows only little love.” (Luke 7:47 NLT) No matter your sin, the severity of it, or the number, God forgives and loves you.

The second verse that stood out really drives the point home in Luke 7:48: Then Jesus said to the woman, “Your sins are forgiven.”  While it seems like four simple words, that is literally everything we need to know as Christians. All of our sins in the past, the present, and the future are all forgiven because of Jesus Christ.

God, I pray that everyone reading this knows that they are loved by You, regardless of their past and their sins. Help us to accept Your unconditional love, God, as we all struggle with accepting this from time to time because we are human. We fall short when we love each other, so the unconditional, everlasting love You give us, God, is incomprehensible to us. Father God, we will never fully comprehend the depth of Your love for us. Open our eyes, ears, and hearts to the true story of Holy Week and all that Jesus endured for us, so that we may not only receive Your love but also walk in the forgiveness of our sins. Gracious and loving God, I pray that we all experience the resurrection of Easter with new ears and hearts this year as well, so that we grow closer to You. It is in Your Son’s name we pray, Amen.
