Be Still, Bunny: A Children’s Story on Trusting God

Every time feet walked by on the sidewalk, in shoes or padded paws, the bunny froze. Her body was like a stone, but her whiskers twitched to make sure no object had come too close to her as she waited. You see, her big eyes are on the side of her head, so the whisker feelers come in handy. Those big eyes are still but are actually scanning for the possible walking threat that comes along the sidewalk.

Along comes a dog on a long rope, leading a person; the bunny has seen this before. They are a few feet away from her now. The rope, called a leash by the shoe-wearers one time, told her that she was safe if she stayed a few feet away from the path. It was like magic to the bunny; the leash kept her safe, and she didn’t always have to run away. Even with this knowledge, she watched the dog-person pair very closely as they approached, just in case.

Her little bunny heart started to pound, but she stayed still for the moment, trusting that leash and the strength of the person holding it. A tiny bark from the dog, followed by a ‘leave it’ from the person, and the pair walked on by the bunny without any problem!

The bunny started to relax her muscles and her breathing started slowing down too. She was safe.

Just as the bunny knew to stay still and trust the leash, we can be still and trust God.

Family Discussion Starters:

  • What did the bunny do when the dog came?
  • How do you think the bunny felt when she saw the dog coming? Why would the bunny feel that way?
  • What did the bunny do when it was scared or worried?
  • What should we do when we are scared or worried?
  • Yes! We can pray to God when we are scared or worried. Let’s pray together now: God, help me to come to you when I am scared or worried. I know you love me and will always be with me. I love you, God. Amen.
  • Scripture to Learn Together: Be still, and know that I am God! (Psalm 46:10) Act it out together to help your child remember the verse in a fun way!
