There’s something about fresh-cut grass, am I right? The smell. The clean look. The adult-like accomplishment of finally getting around to it! Or is that just me?? I actually enjoy it when I get to it. I love being outside. My pups enjoy it. I get a lil’ workout, and I’m always glad I did it. It’s the leading up to the actual mowing that’s not always good or even productive.
Other things ‘come up’ and/or take priority over a mowed lawn. I get too tired to mow. The weather’s not right. There are too many bees (I am allergic, so that’s sort of a valid reason, haha!). Basically, I’m an excuse-expert!
Sadly, my excuses come on strong when it comes to my time with God, too. I need to get to my Bible reading… well, let me walk the dogs real quick first. I need to spend time in prayer… but I’ve been dragging, let me get some extra sleep in, and I’ll get to my prayers later in the day.
But EVERY single time I spend with God, in prayer, in His Word (AKA the Bible), learning, talking to others, listening to podcasts and sermons, singing worship songs…there is NOTHING like it! It’s way better than that fresh grass smell, it’s that fresh Holy Spirit smell!!! The grass just isn’t in order; my life starts to fall into order. I start to see places to prune. I have an urge to set that mower to 1 so I can get that real close cut and avoid those pesky weeds (AKA sin) from growing back.
So here’s to noticing when my ‘spiritual grass’ is getting too long and messy. Noticing when I need to mow it down with the power of God’s Word, through prayer, and simply by spending time with my Father. ✝️
