Grab your reader’s attention by focusing on crafting powerful sentences. 

Have you ever read an article or chapter and thought, ‘What did I just read?’ Your late-night read-a-thon could be the culprit, but it could also be that the author did not slow down to level up their sentences to convey their message.

I’ve been on a mission to sharpen my writing skills, and my latest Compel lesson was on writing strong sentences. Here are 3 takeaways I’ll be putting into action in my writing right away:

• Let your writing REST! Taking a break from your writing can help you spot your weaker sentences or places where you got a little wordy. 
• Remove or replace intensifiers such as ‘very, really, quite, severely.’
• Use strong, vivid, emotion-filled verbs.

Here are a few examples:

       Remove an Intensifier:

❌  I know for me personally, those words are really easy to say, but to put them into action is a whole other thing.

✅ I know for me personally, those words are easy to say, but to put them into action is a whole other thing.

        Use a Stronger Verb:

❌  She walked off without a care in the world

✅  She sauntered off without a care in the world
