The Puppy Who Followed the Whisper: A Children’s Book on Prayer Through the Holy Spirit

Something wasn’t right.

Chipper could feel it. He felt the hairs on his back raise up, and he started to shake. As he looked around, nothing looked familiar. No worries, he thought, I’ll just keep going.

Chipper remembered seeing a rabbit. He is the best rabbit chaser, but this rabbit must have had superpowers because Chipper lost him after a few times around the barn. That’s when Chipper started to use his superpower, too, his super sniffer! Chipper followed the smell of the rabbit for a long time. He was about to take a turn when those hairs on his back stood up again. He lifted his head to look around, finally. Then a feeling hit Chipper deep in his belly, lost! Chipper was lost. He did not know where he was. His super sniffer had betrayed him!

Chipper started running all around the field. His eyes darted left and right as he weaved around in the tall grass. He couldn’t see much because the grass was so tall out here; the grass went well over his head, even. How is he going to get out of this?

Jump! ‘Duh’, he thought to himself, ‘I’ll jump and see where I am.’ Chipper started jumping up and standing on his hind legs, which got him out of the tall grass, but now he was surrounded by trees he didn’t know either. Now what? It was starting to get dark, too.

Chipper sat down on a nearby patch of soft grass to think. Closing his puppy eyes, he said, “Please, help me get home.” Chipper didn’t know who he was talking to, but he had seen his owner do this lots of times in the house, especially before bedtime and when it got really stormy outside with loud thunder. He had heard his owner’s mom call it praying. So Chipper thought, since it works for her, maybe it will help me.

All of a sudden, his super sniffer started to wiggle in a completely different way, more powerful. He caught a scent that he knew VERY well. It was a sweet smell of strawberries that he always smelt when his owner came out of the one room, and her hair was always wet. Oh yeah, it was her shampoo! That means she’s nearby, Chipper just knew it! His tail began to wag uncontrollably as his nose did its job and started to lead him out of the trees. Before he knew it, Chipper was howling as the smell of strawberries got stronger and stronger.

“Chipper?” Now he hears his owner calling his name. He’d know that voice anywhere, from all the gentle commands she gave him, to the comforting words when that thunder came,  and of course, the giggles they had together. His legs started running even faster, and his nose was working double-time now.

There it is up ahead, he could see the barn! That’s when he saw her running towards him; it was his owner. He was lost, but she knew how to come get him. He was okay. He was safe. He was loved.

Chipper jumped into his owner’s arms, giving her all the kisses he could as she lovingly wrapped her arms around him. “You’re okay. You’re home now,” she whispered into his long, floppy ears.

Chipper was no longer lost or searching; he was home. Right then, he knew, he was never truly alone.

I am an aspiring children’s book author, passionate about creating meaningful, faith-filled stories that spark imagination and gentle conversations. Below are a few simple questions you can use with your child after reading to help them reflect, connect, and grow:

  • What did the puppy have to do to find his way home?
  • Right! He prayed and used his super sniffer. You can use prayer, too. When can we stop during our day to pray?
  • What is one ‘thank you’ you want to say to God right now?
  • What is something you need help with that we can pray about together?
  • Optional (If your child is ready): Another cool thing happened to Chipper after he prayed; he felt something inside him that helped him sniff and find his way back home. We have something from God that helps guide us, too. It’s called the Holy Spirit. How does that make you feel, that God is with you through the Holy Spirit?
  • Parents & Guardians, The puppy in this story was lost and prayed to God. I hope this helps open the conversation with your child about talking to God and who the Holy Spirit is. Here are a few Psalms to read, pray through, and learn more for yourself, too: Psalm 25:1-5, Psalm 37:23-24, Psalm 119:105, Psalm 121

With lots of faith and a little fur 🐾
