Inviting the Holy Spirit Into Your Everyday Life

‘They’re just drunk, that’s all.’ Yes, that’s a direct quote from the bible in Acts 2:13.

In Acts 2, the Holy Spirit came down ‘from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house’ (Acts 2:2). Once everyone was filled with the Holy Spirit, they started speaking in other languages, or speaking in tongues. Everyone was confused and did not know what was happening. Then, in verse 2:13, mockers stepped in. Seeing how the people were acting under the influence of the Holy Spirit, some assumed they were drunk, completely unaware that it was the Spirit moving within them.

We are all humans, so this verse should not shock or even surprise me, but today it shocked me. Here is this miraculous event: people are literally being filled with the Holy Spirit for the first time on Earth, and yet there are people mocking it, dismissing it as drunkenness.

I quickly dial back those feelings of shock because I have done the same in my life. I have dismissed miracles and Holy Spirit moments in my life. I’m sure I’ve done an inner eye roll at people’s actions or words when it was truly the Holy Spirit working in them. Reading Acts 2:1-13, I am reminded of the miraculous acts of God that happened back then but are also happening right now!

When we allow God’s Holy Spirit to dwell in our hearts, we are changed, and God can fully use us for His plans, and His plans are for the good. The question is, how do we do this? How do you allow the Holy Spirit in our hearts? I think the answer is simpler than we can make it out to be. We ask God to do so.

Recently, I have been listening to the Worship Initiative (linked here) each weekday. Shane and Shane, a Christian worship band, hold this daily devo tied to worship songs and hymns every weekday, and it is amazing! One thing I love is that they open with a prayer and always end the prayer, prompting us, as listeners, to invite the Holy Spirit in right there. I had never thought of this before. I have been a believer all my life, but I never thought I should invite God into my heart daily, if not more! For me, it is a way to connect with God, empty myself, surrender myself to God, and allow room for the Holy Spirit to fill me and to do God’s good work in me.

Brothers and sisters in Christ, I invite you to do the same right now: invite the Holy Spirit in and then watch what God will do!

If you need the words to help you do so, here are some to use until the words start coming from you (well, actually, that will be the Holy Spirit):

God, I pray that you help me allow Your Holy Spirit to come in my today, right now. I surrender to You, God. I want my actions, my thoughts, my words, and my heart to be guided by You, God. It’s in Your Son’s name I pray, Amen.

With faith,
