The Unmoving Seed

‘Why doesn’t it move? If it’s going to be a living thing, why can’t it find its own place to make a home?’ the little boy asked with pure curiosity.

His mom smiled, used to such questions, and said, ‘Well, the seed is sort of in an in-between time. They are alive, but they are almost sleeping until they are planted. Then they will grow roots and need water and food. That’s when the plant becomes fully alive!’

The little boy scrunched up his face in deep thought. ‘Well, how does the seed get to a good place if there are not any people around to plant it?’

‘The wind may blow it, or it can even ride on an animal’s back or fur to find a home,’ the mom answered.

‘So the plant needs something else, more alive and stronger than it, to move it into a place to fully grow. That’s cool.’ the little boy said as he skipped off, apparently satisfied with the seemingly simple answer.

That’s when the mom started to think we are like the seed in our faith. We need God to move us. Sometimes God uses other people or circumstances to move us. Sometimes we get moved to rich soil right away, and our roots take root, no problem. Other times, we are moved to rough terrain, where we need to work a bit to dig our roots into the rocky soil. The most comforting thing is that if we stay watered by God’s Word, listen for the Holy Spirit, and take time to sit in the Son’s presence (yes, I mean Son and sun in this metaphor), we can grow in the way that God has planned for us. If we don’t move and instead stay in our sin, it will remain dormant like a seed that does not find soil.

Feel and listen to God’s gentle pushes to move.

See you in the next post,

with faith and a little fur 🐾
